Composite vs. Wood

  •  Wood requires pesticide treatments including Heat Treatment, HT and Methyl Bromide, MB (ISPM-15), to prevent infestation.
  • Wood splinters or nails stick out damaging goods and transporters.
  • Forest fires and supply chain issues has recently created a shortage of wood that has led to a serious lack of supply and significant price increases in wood pallets.
  • Composite pallets can easily carry RFID chips to keep track of each pallet.

Environmental Benefits of Surity Pallets

  • Pallet is comprised of 80 percent fiberglass and made primarily from silica sand, an abundant resource found in most parts of the world.
  • The product is almost 100% recyclable – damaged products can be returned to production.
  • They help save our forests.
  • Remove the transportation of beetles and other pests that travel with wooden pallets.
  • With a 33% weight reduction, all areas of fuel consumption in logistics will be reduced (lower GHG and oil demand).

Composite Pallets Saving our Forests

One third of the annual harvested timber in North America is utilized in the wood pallet industry

  • Composite can contribute in a significant way to the preservation of our forests.
  •  According to the World Resource Institute, more than 80 percent of the earth’s natural forests have already been destroyed. Every year in the US 1 million acres of our planet’s trees are destroyed to manufacture wooden pallets representing a major factor in deforestation.
  •  To replenish 1 million acres of trees will take approximately 40 years. 54% of wood pallets are used for only one shipment, and then either stored, burned or thrown away.
  •  It is estimated that nearly 30% of CO2 buildup in our atmosphere can be attributed to deforestation over the past 150 years.

Problem We Solve

Save Waste, Save Money, Save the Environment

Human induced climate change is now recognized by the global community as the greatest environmental threat of the 21st century. Countries, organizations and individuals alike, are starting to take responsibility for making the emissions reductions necessary to stabilize global warming gases in the atmosphere.   Millions of times a day, companies receive and send goods loaded on pallets. Overwhelmingly, these pallets are made of wood and weigh up to 39 kilos (in comparison, Surity composite pallets based on the innovative material weigh around 16.5 kilos). Logisticians know that space + weight = “cost”, sustainability experts know that space + weight = “emissions”.  Given the wood pallet’s universality, it shouldn’t be surprising that the pallet carries with it a significant environmental burden. For starters, there is the pallets incredible use of forest resources. And once put into service, pallets and shipping containers can change the ecological balance of entire continents. Despite the best intentions, and the worst negligence or deceit of companies, they are responsible for transporting invasive insects and bacteria that are destroying entire species causing billions of dollars’ worth of damage to the environment.   What we have, therefore, is an opportunity for durable, sustainable change. According the I.C.L.E.I. (Local Governments for Sustainability, USA) each year, an estimated 10 billion loaded wood pallets are shipped globally. In pallet weight alone, swapping out wood for corrugated pallets could reduce the amount of annual trucking weight by as much as 400 billion pounds, thereby reducing carbon dioxide emissions (CO2) by millions of metric tons annually.
