Human induced climate change is now recognized by the global community as the greatest environmental threat of the 21st century. Countries, organizations and individuals alike, are starting to take responsibility for making the emissions reductions necessary to stabilize global warming gases in the atmosphere. Millions of times a day, companies receive and send goods loaded on pallets. Overwhelmingly, these pallets are made of wood and weigh up to 39 kilos (in comparison, Surity composite pallets based on the innovative material weigh around 16.5 kilos). Logisticians know that space + weight = “cost”, sustainability experts know that space + weight = “emissions”. Given the wood pallet’s universality, it shouldn’t be surprising that the pallet carries with it a significant environmental burden. For starters, there is the pallets incredible use of forest resources. And once put into service, pallets and shipping containers can change the ecological balance of entire continents. Despite the best intentions, and the worst negligence or deceit of companies, they are responsible for transporting invasive insects and bacteria that are destroying entire species causing billions of dollars’ worth of damage to the environment. What we have, therefore, is an opportunity for durable, sustainable change. According the I.C.L.E.I. (Local Governments for Sustainability, USA) each year, an estimated 10 billion loaded wood pallets are shipped globally. In pallet weight alone, swapping out wood for corrugated pallets could reduce the amount of annual trucking weight by as much as 400 billion pounds, thereby reducing carbon dioxide emissions (CO2) by millions of metric tons annually.
